If it was Christmas there would have been sugar-plums dancing in my head. But it wasn’t Christmas and there were no sugar-plums. Just me cruising down the highway on a Ducati 996. I didn’t want to wake up from this dream. But I did. So why was I so rudely awaken from such a grandiose dream?
Oh, now I know what it was. It was the faint humming of the fan on my laptop computer. But I was sure that I turned off the the laptop before I went to bed. A nightly ritual that I usually, and anally, don’t forget.
When I got out of jail I needed money real quick to get around. A friend of mine had been storing all my stuff from my old place, and since I didn’t have a place right now and needed money, I decided to have a fire sale.
Thank God for CraigsList. I took all my belongings that I didn’t need and set them up for sale. There wasn’t much but some furniture and some computer equipment. I was able to acquire enough cash in a week to get me a cell phone and cheap laptop, the rest is history.
The laptop I bought was still being used as my sole machine. Over the years it has had new hard drives and ram but nothing major. An IBM ThinkPad Laptop with a 1.5gig processor and 80 gig hard drive. I have it set up with 2gigs of ram and it seems to hum along. Just like right now.
So what was the deal here? It’s 3AM, my computer seems like it’s working overtime, and I have to take a piss. Pissing was definitely coming first.? But I was curious as to what was going on? Why was my laptop humming away so early in the morning.
Now it usually takes me a couple of lattes in the moring before I can really grasp what’s going on. But at this point in time I new two things were going on. One: I didn’t have time for a latte, after all-it’s only 3AM and I know there’s not a Starbucks open at 3AM. So that will have to wait, and Two: whatever is happening at 3AM to my computer is not good.
A quick shake of the head and instincts kick in – don’t pull the power Justin, pull the card. I pulled the wireless card, no more data being transfered, great. I was sure I turned off the computer, I always do. Why was it on, I turned off the ‘Power On Lan’ feature for the network. What the FK.
Most super geeks like myself would let curiosity kill them and delve into the situation. Me, I’m delving back in to bed, grabbing my Duc and dealing with this in the morning.
How and I going to deal?
It seems as though I never did get back to riding the Duc…………………………………………
